Myles 1st Birthday RFDS Fundraiser!
Hi All,
As some of you know our youngest son Myles has had a really rough start to the
year. He fell ill with a common cold, and ended up developing a secondary
bacterial infection and ultimately went into septic shock with complete organ
failure.
He required urgent life-saving open heart surgery to be placed on a life support machine that no-one in Adelaide at that moment was able to perform.
The Royal Flying Doctors answered the call and instantly sent a charter to Renmark to pick up both Adelaide’s premier Cardiothoracic Surgeon & Paediatric Consultant (from their holiday, none-the-less) to bring them back to save his life. The doctors were rushed in, still wearing their casual clothes, and they got straight to work getting him on the machine to save his life.
After 2.5 hours of surgery, we got the call that he was stable. It was coming down to the wire, and they think that if they were half an hour later the story would be different.
We were then airlifted to the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne for his extended care on life support, as Adelaide did not have the staff or setup to care for him. Myles was then able to be removed from life support 5 days later, and his body has since sprung back to life, kicking every goal he can so far.
The Royal Flying Doctors then sent their jet to Essendon airport to pick up Myles and my wife to get them home to the Womens and Childrens for the rest of his rehab journey. There’s a long road ahead for Myles – both physically and neurologically, but we really do owe his life to the actions and availability of the Royal Flying Doctor Service.
Sunday the 8th of February was his first birthday. It did not turn out anything like we imagined it would months ago, but my wife Julia and I feel as though the best thing we can do celebrate his birthday is to help raise some funds for the Royal Flying Doctor service.

No-one expects to ever need a service like the Royal Flying Doctors, but if something happens to go wrong and they’re needed – that’s when you can understand how truly valuable they are.

Provide a full range of life saving medication such as sedatives, pain relief and antibiotics so the Flying Doctor can be ready for 576 emergency situations.
Send 297 life saving-medical chest to remote communities
Provide one on one counselling to 186 outback Australians during a difficult time
Purchase 122 pieces of equipment that could include ventilators, defibrillators and infusion pumps which are used on board flights
